FAMILY MATTERS: go beyond in search of new learning adventures

IES Los Neveros is located in the town of Huétor Vega, in the metropolitan area of Granada. It is a bilingual school which started this program in the academic year 2018/2019. Our school provides Compulsory Secondary Education to almost 400 students aged between 12 and 17.

Recently, we have noticed how different circumstances are undermining the academic performance of our students. Among all of them, we must highlight the alarming number of family problems which are intensified by local unemployment. This matter has negative effects within the classroom, on school results and on the reduced future expectations that a large number of families have regarding their children’s qualifications.

The lack of motivation, together with the inherent diversity of the class itself, reveals an inadequate management on the scholar institution. Besides, the school management team reveals the need of of leadership strategiesthese would allow them to promote innovation, to get the teaching staff involved in staff involved in the school different plans and projectsas well as to improve the effectiveness of their relationship with the Social Services, especially every time a risky situation may have been detected.

Furthermore, we have also noticed a slight -but increasing- withdrawal of students with excellent academic results towards other schools which are already developing European programs. We need, therefore, an internationalization of our institution which would help us to improve both the school image and the teaching staff’s key competences, not only in terms of linguistic mastery but also regarding our students’ skills and self-esteem. All in all, keeping in mind the improvement of learning outcomes.

Therefore, it seems crucial to develop a European Development Plan that will help us to achieve the following concrete objectives within a period of twelve months –that is from June 1, 2019 to May 31, 2020:
  1. To improve professional skills.
  2. To develop the capacity to promote changes regarding modernization and international openness within the educational organizations.
  3. To improve school accuracy and self-esteem.
  4. To improve learning outcomes .

There would be ten participants working in the current project, even though the rest of the teaching staff would also be involved indirectly. Among them, we highlight the presence of two members of the school management team as well as the coordinator of the bilingual project. The teacher’s ages range from 29 to 60, most of them with a degree and/or a PhD.

In order to achieve the intended objectives, the following actions have been programmed:
A. Teaching and Job-shadowing: Istituto di Istruzione Superiore Codogno, in Codogno, Italy.
B. Job-shadowing : Publiczna Szkola Podstawowa nr 34 w Radomiu in the Polish city of Radom.
C. Three formative courses: “Burnout prevention in a school system”; “School leadership and educational innovation, “Classroom management solutions for teachers: new methodologies, effective motivation, cooperation and evaluation strategies”.

Once these experiences are fulfilled, the results obtained would be published together   with our newly acquired knowledge by using different means. We would also implement learning among equals, the creation of a video, a booklet, different protocols or an international presentation.

What outcomes do we expect to obtain by fulfilling this project?

  • Regarding the students, we aim the improvement of their results; also, their self-esteem promotion and motivation, in order to compensate the precarious family conditions and stimulate them to remain in higher educational levels.
  • Concerning the teaching staff, we expect to boost their motivation, to improve their teaching skills, including linguistic competence, and to enlarge methodological approaches on classroom management and coexistence issues.
  • Relating our school, we believe in its transformation through internationalization and European connection.

This all would be headed by a management team that would obtain better leadership tools to promote innovation and improvement. The benefits would be extended to all domains. From the local perspective, we would help to ease hostile situations through the promotion of our students towards higher education. By our experience diffusion, we would encourage other schools in our area to take part in international programs. Last, from an international perspective, we would promote European cohesion and relationships with other countries in the international scope.
